Sullivan Upper Fencing Club enjoyed notable success at the Irish Youth Championships last weekend, held in the sports centre of Dublin’s Technological University in Blanchardstown, with the club’s fencers producing an excellent set of results and securing four medals from six competitors. In the U17 Women’s Foil, Lydia Hamilton earned a bronze medal, finishing joint third following a strong performance that took her as far as the semi-finals. In the U14 Men’s Foil, William Penny also finished in joint third place to take bronze, while Flynn Woolsey-Jensen and Shion Suto-Murphy finished just outside the medals in 5th and 6th. The club enjoyed further success in the U14 Women’s Foil, where Grace Tsang secured the silver medal, while Olivia Morse claimed bronze, ensuring a double podium finish for SU. These results reflect the training and commitment of the fencers involved and the continued strength of junior fencing within SUFC. - Irish National Fencing Championships
The Irish National Fencing Championships, held last Saturday and Sunday, decide the six senior fencing champions for all of Ireland each year, i.e. in men’s and women’s foil, epee and sabre. This year they were held in the Sports Centre of Dublin’s Technological University in Blanchardstown. SUFC had 7 entrants: Amelia Penny, Cassidy Ogle, Erin Keogh and Lydia Hamilton in the women’s foil and Myles Wilkinson, Flynn Woolsey-Jensen and William Penny in the men’s foil. Also competing was ex-Sullivan fencer Alexander Penny (currently with Oxford University Fencing Club). On the Saturday Amelia and Cassidy made the quarter-finals of the WF. Cassidy was knocked out at this stage, taking 6th place, while Amelia progressed through to the semis. Here, despite putting up a strong fight, she was beaten 11-15 by the No.1 seed and eventual winner. This gave her joint third place and a bronze medal. Erin and Lydia were both knocked out at the L16 stage, finishing 12th and 13th. Amelia’s 3rd place moves her up from No.7 to No.5 in the Senior Irish WF rankings. In the men’s foil Myles and Alexander both made the last 16, but progressed no further, finishing in 12th and 13th. Flynn and William (still U14 juniors) both lost in the L32, but only after battling hard against much older and more experienced fencers. Well done to all 7 SU fencers (and 1 ex-SU fencer). The next event for SU fencers will be for our juniors at the Irish Youth Championships next weekend on 25th April. David White SUFC Coach 20 Apr 2026

- Sullivan Fencing: 2026 East of Ireland Open Fencing Tournament
The East of Ireland Open, the 5 th of Ireland’s 6 National Circuit events, took place last weekend 14 th and 15 th March in University College Dublin. Eight SU fencers took part: Myles Wilkinson, Adam Sugar, Ethan Dilworth, Flynn Woolsey-Jensen and William Penny in the men’s foil and Amelia Penny, Cassidy Ogle and Erin Keough in the women’s foil. In the men’s foil Myles made the last 16, finishing in 11 th after a narrow defeat for a place in the last 8. Adam was just outside the L16 in 17th, while Ethan, after being knocked out by Myles in the L32, finished 22 nd . Flynn and William both won their L64 fights, ending up in 29 th and 30 th , respectable results for two 13 year old juniors testing the waters of senior competition. Unfortunately, from a team Sullivan point of view, Amelia and Cassidy met in the L16 of the women’s foil, meaning that only one of SU’s 2 top female fencers would make it through to the L8. Amelia won 15-11, but was then beaten in her quarter-final by the eventual competition winner to take 7 th place with Cassidy 10 th . Erin finished 18 th , this being her first senior competition, having just fenced in her last ever competition as a junior (NIJFS U16) the week before. This was a tough senior competition that had strong international attendance, with fencers competing from Canada, the USA and across Europe, along with the best in Ireland (North and South). The next event for SUFC fencers will be the Irish National Championships on 18 th & 19 th April in Dublin. David White SUFC Coach 17 Mar 2026
- Noah Meharg - Year 10
Noah competed in the schools British trampolining finals over the weekend at the velodrome in Derby. There was strong competition and he represented Sullivan well, just missing 3rd place by 0.03 of a point. He finished 4th which is a fantastic achievement and puts him 4th in the whole of Britain. We had a great weekend and Noah was delighted to hear he was competing beside Royalty, princess Charlotte was on a trampoline beside him when he was doing his routine, with her mother sitting in the bleachers trying (not very well) to blend into the crowd.

William Penny won his 3 rd gold of the year, which maintained his position at the top of the U14M points table and gave him the overall U14 boys’ championship title. Along with William’s win, the U14M mid-field positions show the current strength of SUFC’s junior fencing, with places 4 to 9 all filled by SU fencers: Flynn Woolsey-Jensen, Eric Hutchinson, Shion Suto-Murphy, Mark Ross, Zach Fyffe and Rory Wilson respectively. U16s Lydia Hamilton, Amy Walker and Erin Keough finished 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th respectively in the U16F. - Sullivan Fencing:early 2026 National and International Results
Edinburgh Open On the 10th of January SU fencer Cassidy Ogle began the new year by taking part in the 2026 Edinburgh Open. Competing against Scotland’s best female foil fencers she finished 9th overall. However, this also qualified her to compete in a secondary foil competition for those finishing outside the last 8. In this she was seeded 3rd after the poule stage and then went on to beat the no.1 seed in the final. Leon Paul Foil Open Myles Wilkinson travelled to London on the 1st of February for the Leon Paul Foil Open, one of the UK’s major foil competitions. In a very tough field Myles finished 49th, but as in the Edinburgh Open, this event also included a secondary foil competition which he then entered. Myles made the semi-finals where he lost to the eventual winner to finish joint 3rd. CEP Marathon Fleuret While Myles was in London, Cassidy spent the weekend 31st Jan - 1st Feb in Paris at the CEP Marathon Fleuret competition (fleuret = foil in english). This is a world famous junior foil competition run by the Cercle des Escrimeurs Parisiens club, where the competitors fence multiple times across Saturday and Sunday in 3 poule stages followed by a knock-out stage. Cassidy, in the U17F category, was competing in a field of 107 of the best young female fencers from around the world. In her first poule of day one, after a nervous start she finished 101st, but after gathering confidence bettered this to finish 65th in the second. In her third poule on day two she placed 80th, then after the knock-out stage achieved an overall finish of 81st. Well done Cassidy and Myles, a great start to 2026, both fencers gaining valuable competition experience and growing their competition skills and confidence. {video: Cassidy in red shoes on piste 108}

Women’s Foil Four SU girls were competing: Amelia Penny, Cassidy Ogle, Lydia Hamilton and Grace Tsang. Men’s Foil Six SU boys had entered: Myles Wilkinson, Adam Sugar, Tom Woolsey-Jensen, Ethan Dilworth, Flynn Woolsey-Jensen and William Penny, with juniors Ethan, Flynn and William all experiencing their first senior competition.
