Congratulations to all Year 12 Home Economics students on very successfully completing their GCSE practical examination. The students were required to make three dishes and accompaniments which would reflect the tip for eating well ‘eat lots of fruit and veg’. A fabulous range of dishes were produced by all students. The Sullivan Singers have successfully reached the Northern Ireland final of the All Island Choir Competition 2014. ~ The final is to be held Monday 13 October 2014 in St Patricks Cathedral, Armagh and will be recorded as last year by RTE.

Boys Hockey 1st XI – Qualify for Irish Schools Competition Sullivan was in a group with Cookstown High School, Royal and Prior School and Grosvenor Grammar, the top qualifying team would automatically progress to the finals in Dublin from the 22nd – 24th October. The runners up would go into a playoff against the second team in the other group. Cookstown High School Our opening match was at Civil Service against Cookstown. In a very tight match we fought hard and scraped away with a win. We took the lead but Cookstown equalised with a penalty stroke but we finally got the win we deserved with a well finished goal near the end. Sullivan won 2 – 1 – scorers C Carson and R Hancock Royal & Prior School We had to make the long journey to Raphoe for our second match against Raphoe. After the results from the previous week, we had to beat Royal & Prior to ensure that we had the opportunity to win the group. We knew it was going to be hard as it usually is after the journey to Raphoe so it was a great result to win 3-2. Sullivan won 3 – 2 – scorers J Matchett, P McDonnell and F Gibson Grosvenor Grammar In our final match a draw would be enough to win the group. We went to Grosvenor with Cork in the back of our minds and we just wanted to get the game played to know if we were going. We played well and came out with a convincing win. Tournament on 29/30 August  2014 Hockey – Sullivan 1st XI miss out on goal difference Sullivan started the season with the usual competition against Campbell, Bangor GS and Regent House. This year it was sponsored by Feherty Travel. The Sullivan squad was large and made up of Year 10s to Year 14s, giving the coaches the opportunity to assess as many players as possible. The competition was played over a Friday and Saturday. Sullivan played their Friday match against Campbell and had a 6 – 1 victory with goals from F Gibson (2), M Jeffrey, C Carson and M Morris (2) On Saturday morning a very much changed team played Bangor GS, this again resulted in a win, 2 – 1, with goals from F Gibson and J Matchett. The final game was a game Sullivan had to win as Regent House had a better goal difference, by one goal. The game was very competitive and a draw was the final score, 2 all, Sullivan’s goals were scored by J Matchett and M Crookshanks. The result meant that Regent won by one goal. Regent player Rowan Poots also pipped Matthew Crookshanks to player of the tournament. Thanks to Campbell College for hosting the Tournament, a great way for local schools to start off the new hockey season in a friendly and competitive manner. These certificates were awarded in Acting, Speech Verse and Prose and Spoken English. They were taught by Mrs Catherine Gardiner in after school lessons. Any students interested in taking up Speech and Drama lessons after school should contact Ms Patterson.

Summer holidays proved very busy for some Sullivan musicians. Kate Adair, Georgia Begley, Jennie Pitt, Charlie Gregg, Michael Montgomery and Alex Hardacre successfully auditioned for the Ulster Youth training Choir and spent a week’s residential in Campbell College under the musical direction of Dominic Peckham. The culmination of a week of music making, rehearsals and singing lessons was a concert entitled Rhythm Nation at Craigavon Civic Centre where the choir presented a programme of music spanning from sixteenth century syncopation to the sounds of new contemporary composers. Anna Gregg, Suzy McDougall, Karis Fitch and Ross McKenna and Jamie Hardacre represented the school at the Ulster Youth Choir who held a residential summer course before their main concert in St. Anne’s Cathedral. The programme consisted of music written about the themes of conflict, resolution and peace. For some members this was followed by a once-in-a lifetime experience of joining the BBC Youth Prom Choir for a performance of Britten’s War Requiem in August at the Royal Albert Hall. Anna Blake, Samuel Feinberg, Claire Moore (violins), Sophie Pyper (french horn), Amy Hartin (piano) and Cathryn Lynch (percussion) successfully auditioned for the Ulster Youth Orchestra in their 21st year and during an intense residential course prepared their Ulster Hall concert programme which included Smetana Dance of the Comedians, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in Bb minor and selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite. In the Opera House during July Sullivan Upper musical and dramatic talent was well represented in the Opera House Production of Guys and Dolls.

Fergus McMullan (Year 11) is a student of the Northern Ireland Karate Academy and trains in Holywood and Stormont 3 times a week and competes and travels all over the world.  Fergus has recently achieves a British title in June 2014 and has been selected to represent Northern Ireland this October at World karate championships.

Scott Miller (Year 10) took part in the Ulster U18 Boy’s Open and Under 13 Open Competitions in Ulster, Leinster and Munster.  He won the Leinster U13 Open Championship which was played at Corrstown Golf Club on 21 July 2014.  He also son the Ulster U13 qualifying competition at Dunmurry Golf Club on 18 August and finished 6th in the Grand Final at Moyola Golf Club. Scott has had a great golfing season during which he equalled the course record at his home club of Clandeboye and won the Juvenile Champion Golfer of the Year trophy for 2014.  His handicap is now 5.

Congratulations to the Intermediate Boys Tennis Team (Chris Cree, Ben Cree, Joe Heatley and Paul McDonnell) on winning the Ulster Intermediate Trophy.

Katharine Hill (Yr12), Rachel Barton (Yr13) and Zara Malsee (Yr13) who represented the Ulster U17 Development squad who played a three match series against England in Lileshall in May. They won the first match 4-2 with Zara scoring a hat-trick, they lost the second 3-1 and the third 3-2 with Zara scoring the two goals.
