  • Religious Studies | Sullivan Upper

Religious Studies Departmental Aims Religious Studies plays a significant role in the curriculum and in the development of the individual pupil. It provides pupils with the opportunities to develop their personal understanding, moral character and enhance their spiritual and ethical awareness. This is done by enabling them to learn about, discuss, evaluate and learn from religious beliefs, practices and values by supplying opportunities to engage with challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life and their place in society and the world around them. Religious Studies is taught at all levels in the school. It is a compulsory subject up to end of Key Stage 4. Thereafter, pupils may choose to continue to AS or A2 level. • School Council | Sullivan Upper

School Council Sullivan Upper School is a community of pupils and staff working together to maintain high academic standards in a caring and supportive environment. One of the ways in which this learning community is strengthened is through the combined efforts of pupil representatives and members of staff working together to address relevant issues. The aim is to encourage pupils to realise that this is their school and as such their opinions are valued. It also enables staff to gain a pupil perspective on school life and vice versa and so enhance the whole experience for everyone concerned. The role of the pupil representatives is to bring forward pupil opinions on a variety of issues and discuss them with staff. Also the pupils act as a link with their peers during consultation exercises and provide a useful channel to inform others of forthcoming developments. Each Form Class elects two pupil representatives. Each year group then elects two pupils from this group who represent the year group on the School Council which meets once a month. 1/2 The benefits of such activities are far reaching. Involving young people in decision making is not only about recognising their rights, but also about developing skills of co-operation which are necessary if we are to achieve a more cohesive and democratic society. If children are expected to have views and as responsible citizens to elect representatives to express those views within a democratic framework, then the school council is a part of introducing pupils to that process. When the Year representatives are elected, their term of office is from April to April. These representatives express the thoughts of their Year group as informed by their Class Representatives in each form base. The Council will elect a Chairperson, Vice- Chairperson, Secretary and Publicity Officer. The Chairperson will liaise with Miss Aranha (Student Council Coordinator) on the agenda for each monthly meeting. Student Council Representatives April 2023 – April 2024 Chairperson: Charlie Vice-Chairperson: John Secretary: Rayyan Publicity Officer: Katherine Year 9 representatives: Rayyan and Issy Year 10 representatives: Adam and John Year 11 representatives: Chloe and Myles Year 12 representatives: Ethan and Finn Year 13 representatives: Charlie and Reuben Year 14 representatives: Katherine and Charlie

  • Lunch at Sullivan | Sullivan Upper

Lunch at Sullivan The school dining hall is known as the Silver Robin restaurant. Its lower floor provides a cafeteria-style lunch which offers those who choose to have school lunches a choice of main courses, sandwiches, fruit, desserts and soft drinks. The upper floor is available for those who bring a packed lunch to school and also offers a range of snacks and bottled drinks for sale. The range and quality of food available have made the Silver Robin very popular with staff and pupils. The Silver Robin follows the Nutritional Standards to ensure healthy menus are provided. The school’s cashless system is biometric which means that pupils do not need to carry a card to top up their balance or pay for school meals. A scan of their finger is taken and this is used instead of a card. The Silver Robin operates on a cash-free basis but users must be sure to have sufficient credit on their accounts before purchasing. There are a number of ways to top up a pupil’s account for the Silver Robin: (1) parents may remotely top up their child’s school meals account by credit or debit card through their Parentmail PMX account and receive reminders to top up when the balance is low (this has proved to be the most popular method); (2) parents can send cheques into the accounts office to be allocated to their son’s/daughter’s school meals account; (3) pupils may add cash to this account through two revaluator machines located within the school. All pupils eat their lunch in the Silver Robin, except for Year 14 who can make use of the Common Room which has its own separate dining facilities. Both floors of the Silver Robin are supervised throughout lunch-time. Parents who wish their son or daughter to go home at lunch-time should request the school’s formal permission to do so by letter to Mrs Moore, our pastoral Vice-Principal, via the Form Teacher. The Silver Robin currently operates a tuck shop at break-time on the ground floor. Details of the day to day operation of the Silver Robin will be supplied to pupils.
