Fencing: Sullivan at Round 4 of the Northern Ireland Junior Foil Series
SU Fencers at NIJFS R4
En garde!
Sunday 5 February saw the 4th round of the NI Junior Foil Series held at Hunterhouse College in Belfast. Seventeen SU fencers competed across 4 age groups; results below.
U12 Girls
Emma Yeaman took U12 silver, having again made the final in this category. From the 4 rounds so far, she has had one win and three second places, maintaining her position as series leader. Olivia White won her 4th bronze of the series, keeping her at number 3 in the rankings, while Alex Burke kept her 5th place in the table with a 6th place finish on the day.
U12 Boys
Alexander Penny and Jonah McConnell fought well, but had some tough competition in this age group, finishing 10th and 11th.
U14 Girls
Sullivan girls brought home 3 medals in the U14s: silver, plus 2 bronze. Anna Vaughan took the silver after making the final for the 4th time in succession, her 4 second places giving her a narrow series points lead. Willow Wolsey and Izzy Evans shared the bronze medal honours; Izzy now holding 3rd in the series rankings, Willow 5th. Ruzi Statham made the quarter-finals, but remained just outside the medals in 5th place, while Victoria Morris also made the quarters and finished 8th. Tara Millar, Angharad King and Rachel McKillen were 9th, 11th and 12th.
U14 Boys
Sullivan’s four musketeers, namely Cormac Kitchen, Oliver Galbraith, Jonathan Mallon and Benjamin Griffiths once again represented SU in the boys’ U14s. Ben, Cormac and Jonathan all made the quarter finals, finishing 5th, 6th and 7th. Unfortunately Oliver and Jonathan were drawn against each other in the last 16, where Jonathan narrowly edged out his teammate 15-13 in a long and close-fought bout.
Well done all SU fencers who attended.
