Sullivan Upper School began in 1877 in the building that is now Holywood’s public library and moved to its present site in 1939. There are about 1060 pupils in the secondary department which is a co-educational voluntary grammar school for day pupils aged between 11 and 18. The Preparatory Department has about 180 pupils aged between 5 and 11 with the P5, 6 and 7 classes housed in the Grant Wing of the main school site and the lower preparatory classes in Dromkeen House, Alexandra Park off My Lady’s Mile in Holywood. An annual capital fee of £140 is charged and voluntary contributions of £70 per term (£80 per term from September 2010) are requested. Arrangements for contributing through Gift Aid and paying by direct debit are welcomed. The Board of Governors have determined that in accordance with the Education Reform [NI] Order 1989, pupils and their parents will not be charged for activities that occur solely or mainly within the school day. Charges are made however for individual music tuition and in a number of other instances. A full statement on the school’s policy on charging and remissions is available from the school office. Copies of the admissions criteria for Year 8 and those for admission to Year 13 and other years are available upon request from the Principal’s P.A., Sarah Herron.
