Home Economics
What is Home Economics?
When we think about Home Economics most of us think about cooking and food. In fact it is much more than that. Home Economics delivers vital skills that enable students to lead effective lives as individuals and family members as well as members of the wider community.
Home Economics helps pupils explore their health in a practical context, enhancing their potential to live a healthy lifestyle and make responsible choices about their diet and food.
Home Economics gives pupils a sense of themselves as social beings and how they relate to one another; making them aware of the values and lifestyles that are different to their own and helping them make reasoned judgements in family relationships.
Home Economics increases pupil awareness of their role as consumers in a changing economy to help them become discerning and effective when making judgements in relation to the environment and personal finances.
Home Economics is part of the minimum requirement for every pupil at Key Stage 3.
Home Economics at Sullivan! The Home Economics department have two multipurpose classrooms with ICT facilities and interactive technology.
At Key Stage 3: Year 8 and 10 all pupils study Home Economics for two periods each week and four periods in Year 9.
‘Well. I am in third year but I have only been doing home economics for two years. I think home economics is brilliant. I didn’t get to do it at my old school but when I got to Sullivan and went into the first class I loved it. The practical is brilliant but the theory is excellent too. At the moment we are learning about credit cards. H.E is a great subject as it prepares you for later stages in life’. Aaron Hutchman Year 10
It is also an enjoyable option at GCSE, AS and A Level. Our pupils at this stage are interested and dedicated and achieve excellent examination results.
‘I have studied Home Economics for 6 years now and it’s still fantastic (if you can call any school work fantastic) because I get to learn about loads of interesting topics, like Mental Health and Sexual Health issues, as well as all the various nutrients and vitamins…. and yes it may sound boring but its not (compared to other school subjects)! The fact that we get to cook really yummy food is also pretty sweet….although my food doesn’t usually make it home (for obvious reasons!)’…. Jessica Kirk Year 13
‘This year I am studying Home Economics as one of my AS level subjects. When people hear Home Economics they think oh cooking and an easy girls subject. This isn’t true! It is for both girls and boys. It is my favourite subject due to the wide range of topics that we cover and the fact it can lead into many professions’. Roxanne Morris Year 13 |
